Elia Brown Riding the Wave of Liberia’s Surfing Future
The Last Wave Surf School Aims to Grow Talent and Tourism in Robertsport

Elia Brown, often referred to as Elijah Brown, is emerging as one of the most influential figures in Liberia’s growing surf scene.
Based in the coastal town of Robertsport, Brown has combined his passion for the ocean with a vision for national development through the launch of The Last Wave Surf School, a new academy designed to nurture local talent while attracting international visitors.
Surfing in Liberia traces back to the late 20th century, when returning members of the Liberian diaspora and visiting surfers began exploring the country’s consistent Atlantic swells. Robertsport, with its long right-hand point breaks and uncrowded beaches, soon gained quiet recognition among adventurous surfers. Over time, a small but dedicated local community formed, helping establish Liberia as one of West Africa’s most promising surf destinations alongside emerging scenes in countries like Senegal and Ghana.
Brown’s academy builds on that legacy. The Last Wave Surf School offers professional lessons for beginners and advanced surfers, swim training for water safety, and surfboard rentals. Beyond sport, the school provides structure and opportunity for young Liberians, introducing discipline, ocean awareness, and new career pathways tied to tourism.
Brown is also featured in the 2024 documentary “We the Surfers,” which highlights Liberia’s evolving surf culture, and he plays a key role in the Robertsport Surf Club, an organization that supports local surfers and protects the region’s famous breaks.
As Liberia strengthens its tourism sector, Brown’s work positions surfing as both a cultural asset and an economic driver, helping inspire the next generation while putting Robertsport firmly on the global surf map.
