Liberia has officially launched its highly anticipated County Games, bringing together athletes, coaches, and supporters from all 15 counties in a celebration of sport, culture, and national unity. The opening ceremony took place at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, featuring a colorful parade of athletes, traditional performances, and speeches from government and sports officials.
This year’s Games include a wide range of competitions, from track and field, football, basketball, and volleyball, to traditional wrestling and cultural relay events. Organizers say the event aims not only to showcase athletic talent but also to foster camaraderie and healthy competition among Liberia’s diverse communities.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Youth and Sports emphasized the importance of nurturing local talent, saying the County Games provide an important platform for identifying future national stars and promoting grassroots sports development. “These Games are about opportunity, unity, and pride,” the Minister stated, adding that increased investment in county-level athletics will strengthen Liberia’s overall sports ecosystem.
